I can just imagine what my students will be saying this fall: “But it’s 93% my own words!”
Well, regardless of what Republican apologists have been saying, “Plagiarism is a serious charge. If true, it has the potential to upend a career and mar a journalist’s reputation for life,” as Is it original? An editor’s guide to identifying plagiarism states.
And while students have yet to cite Melania Trump’s speech as a defense, I do often hear, “But I didn’t mean to!” As “Is it original?” points out, “Whether or not the journalist meant to plagiarize is a question best reserved for determining the severity of the crime, not for establishing whether it happened.”
So, to any student who doesn’t think that plagiarism is a big deal, you’re wrong. It’s serious mistake, and one that bears serious consequences.
Don’t do it.
